September quarter gains for ANZ Smart Choice Super

A surprising market turnaround after the Brexit shock has led to positive returns for ANZ Smart Choice Super, writes Mark Rider.

ANZ Smart Choice Super funds delivered positive returns for the September quarter, despite a shaky start to the 2016-17 financial year.

The quarter started strongly in July with most growth asset classes generating strong positive returns. This was despite considerable volatility in shares and currency markets as a result of the Brexit.

Growth assets are designed to grow your investment. They include investments such as shares and property. They tend to carry higher levels of risk, yet have the potential to deliver higher returns over longer investment time frames, which is why they’re generally attractive to younger investors who are comfortable to trade security and certainty for more potential growth.

Also in this quarter, ANZ Smart Choice Super achieved CANSTAR’s five-star “Outstanding Value” status for the fourth year running. CANSTAR’s 2016 analysis considered 68 superannuation schemes and its star ratings are calculated by comparing products based on price and features.

September-Quarter Performance

The ANZ Smart Choice Super lifestage fund portfolios with higher allocations to growth assets (1990s and 1980s) performed the strongest, because those assets performed well in the three months to the end of September 2016.

It should be noted, older lifestage funds with higher allocations to defensive assets also did well, as fixed-income investments returned close to 1 per cent for the quarter.
